How to add a signature in Google Docs
Google Docs has no signature button, but two methods work well: inserting a transparent PNG of your signature (cleanest), or scribbling one with the built-in Drawing tool (fastest). Here are both.
Before you start: you'll need your signature as an image. The typed signature generator gives you a crisp transparent PNG that looks far better than a mouse-drawn scribble — free, no account, and nothing you type leaves your browser.
What Google Docs can and can't do with signatures
Google Docs is often the first place people need a signature — offer letters, freelance agreements, and school forms live there — and the app's signature support is famously indirect. There's no signature button. What Docs does have is solid image handling and a built-in Drawing tool, and both routes produce a perfectly usable signed document once you know the wrapping settings.
The choice between the two routes comes down to how the result looks. The Drawing tool's Scribble line is quick, but signing with a mouse produces the shaky, childlike line everyone recognizes — fine for initialing a shared doc, less fine on a client contract. Inserting a prepared transparent PNG from the typed signature generator (or the handwritten one, drawn calmly at full size) reads as deliberate and professional.
Keep in mind that a Google Doc is a living document: anyone with edit access can alter it after you sign, and version history makes the edit visible but doesn't prevent it. The standard practice is to sign, then export to PDF (File → Download → PDF) and share the PDF as the record copy.
Step by step
Create your signature PNG
Type your name, pick a script style, and download the transparent PNG. Do this first so the file is ready in your Downloads folder.
Insert the image
In your document, place the cursor where the signature belongs and choose Insert → Image → Upload from computer, then select the PNG.
Set the image behavior
Click the image and choose In front of text from the toolbar that appears below it. This lets you drag the signature freely over a signature line instead of it behaving like a giant text character.
Resize and place it
Drag the corner handles until the signature looks pen-sized, then position it overlapping the line slightly.
Alternative: the Drawing tool
For a quick one-off, use Insert → Drawing → + New, pick the Scribble line tool, draw your signature, and click Save and close. It's convenient, but mouse scribbles rarely look like your real signature — the PNG route reads as far more professional.
Troubleshooting
Image inserts as a huge block that breaks the layout
New images arrive Inline by default. Click the image and choose In front of text from the small toolbar under it; then resize with a corner handle and drag it onto the line.
Can't select the image behind text
Click any text near it, then use Tab or arrow keys — or temporarily switch the image to Inline from the image options sidebar, adjust, and switch back.
The Drawing tool signature looks wrong
Scribble strokes can't be smoothed after the fact. Delete and redraw slowly, or zoom the drawing canvas larger before signing — larger strokes scale down smoother. If it still looks shaky, the PNG route exists for a reason.
Signature missing in the downloaded PDF
Almost always a wrapping issue where the image sat outside the page margin. Drag it fully inside the text area, then re-export.
Best practices
- Store your signature PNG in Google Drive — Insert → Image → Drive makes it a two-click insert in any future document.
- Sign at the end of editing, not the start; layout changes above the signature can shift a floating image.
- For documents needing more than one signer, add a simple table with a row per signer — images position more predictably inside cells.
- Lock the record copy by exporting to PDF and sharing that file, keeping the Doc as your working version.
Common questions
Why can't I move my signature image freely?
Its wrapping is set to "Inline". Click the image and switch to "In front of text" — then it floats wherever you drag it.
Does the signature stay when I export to PDF?
Yes. File → Download → PDF preserves the image exactly where you placed it, which is the standard way to send a signed copy.
Can others edit or remove my signature?
Anyone with edit access to the document can delete the image. For a tamper-resistant record, export the signed document to PDF and share the PDF instead of the editable Doc.
Can I sign a Google Doc on my phone?
The Docs mobile app supports Insert → Image from your camera roll, so a prepared signature PNG works. The Drawing tool is desktop-only, which is another argument for keeping a PNG ready.
Does Google Docs have an eSignature feature?
Google Workspace has been rolling out a native eSignature feature for paid tiers, which adds signature fields to Docs and PDFs. On personal accounts the image method in this guide is the standard route.
How do I add a signature line for someone else to sign?
Type an underscore line or insert a bottom-border paragraph, add the signer's name and title beneath it, and leave room above. The other party follows this same guide to place their mark.
