"Just sign it electronically" can mean five different things, from typing your name to applying a cryptographic certificate. Here's what each type actually is, what the law says about it, and a simple rule for choosing the right one.

Every week, millions of documents get signed without a pen touching paper. But the word "signature" is doing a lot of work in that sentence — the person clicking "I agree" on a software license, the freelancer pasting a script-font PNG onto an invoice, and the executive applying a certificate-backed digital signature to a merger agreement are all "signing electronically," and the law treats each situation with different machinery.

Understanding the five types isn't academic. It answers the two questions people actually have: is my signature good enough for this document? and is the other party's signature good enough for me?

1. The wet ink signature (the baseline)

Ink on paper is where every other type gets its legitimacy from — electronic signature laws are all, at heart, statements that a digital act can stand in for the pen. Wet ink still rules a shrinking territory: wills and codicils in most jurisdictions, certain notarized documents (where remote e-notarization isn't available), some court filings, and any document where a counterparty simply insists on it.

The practical problem with wet ink in 2026 isn't validity — it's logistics. Print, sign, scan, email introduces delay, degrades quality, and produces a copy anyway. When a document doesn't legally require ink, insisting on it usually costs more than it protects.

5. The certificate-based digital signature

This is the one that's genuinely different technology. A digital signature uses public-key cryptography: signing generates a hash of the document encrypted with the signer's private key, and anyone can verify — mathematically — both who signed and that not one byte has changed since. Certificates chain to trusted authorities, and PDF readers display a verification banner automatically.

"A scanned image of my ink signature is more authentic than a generated one." Legally they're the same object — an image adopted as your mark.
